Today is the first day of school (with the kids) for most of you. My wife Wendy teaches second grade, so I am well aware what an extraordinary group of people you are.
I’ve heard about the classroom with 20 children, and 2 or 3 of the kids take up 80% of your attention because of behavior.
I’ve heard about the children who can barely keep their eyes open because no one makes them go to bed.
I’ve seen the crayon-colored papers where the child created a picture of you and thanked you for being their teacher.
I’ve seen the incredible pressure placed on you to make the testing results make the school look good.
I’ve heard about the child who comes up just to hug you.
There’s open house day just before the new year starts and students from the previous year come in just to say “Hello”.
I see the total exhaustion on your face when you come home at the end of the day.
I know about the children who seem to have never been disciplined in their entire life and you would swear they will be in prison before they reach the age of 10.
Finally, I’ve had some tough jobs in my life; BUT, none are tougher than being a teacher. I don’t know how you do it. BUT, I know why you do it….because you love the children. You want to see them to grown up to be good people and have good lives.
Teachers, you are good people!!
